For many people, moving to Spain to live permanently is a dream come true. Happily, most of the time they are not disappointed, in fact during all the years we have sold Javea property, I can only think of three cases of people returning to the UK because they decided they would prefer to live back in Britain. Most people who buy a property in Javea are delighted with their decision, although this may not always be true for all regions of Spain.
Many people purchase a house in Spain without doing adequate research, and without anticipating that moving to a new country can be very isolating. If you do not speak the local language, you’re basically forced to socialise with expats, and in many cases this means mixing with people you would not usually mix with back in your own country.
For those who have found they have made a bad decision in recent years, things have been even harder – because simply selling up and moving back to the UK is not an option with the housing market being in such a bad way.
Before you move to Spain, it is very important that you do your homework. Try to spend prolonged periods in the town you are thinking of moving to, rather than just a visit during the warm summer months. Resort towns can look very different in the winter and it is imperative that you know exactly what you are letting yourself in for.
If you do not have a pension or other means of fixed income when you move to the country, you should be aware that finding work in Spain at the moment is difficult. However, many people are overcoming this hurdle and making a living in Spain by working from home in a virtual environment.
Before you make the move, make sure you have enough money to last you for an appropriate time and some type of employment setup if you are not of retirement age. When you visit the region talk to as many expats and local business owners as possible, to find out what living in the area is really like.
It goes without saying that learning some Spanish will also be a huge advantage and make settling into your new home a lot easier.
