Bulls To The Sea

The main festival in Javea is in honour of 'Our Lady of Loreto', and is a fun-filled occasion based in the Old Town port area. The fiesta takes place during the last week of August and the first week of September and at the heart of the celebration is the 'Bous a la Mar', meaning Bulls to the Sea.

Javea has its own twist to the national tradition of bull fighting, and the aim of the game is to get a bull to fall into the sea. Seats are set up along the beach area for spectators to watch and there is a paddock located right on the beach. Six bulls are placed in the paddock, and at the sound of a lone firework, the fun begins. The bull races out into the sandy area where some of the locals try their best to lure it into the water. The men continuously jump into the sea as the bull runs parallel to the water bearing its horns at them. The animals are quite clued up, although occasionally one does fall in, but is quickly rescued by the locals.
The Fiesta of the 'Virgen de Loreto' takes place over a week, and is filled with processions with floats and firework displays. The streets are highlighted with colourful tinsel and decorations. Live music is played and many of the locals dress in their national costumes and perform national dances. Paella is cooked in the streets and churros are sold in abundance. There is a celebratory mass ceremony to honour the 'Lady of Loreto'.
